A gas bill usually shows your billing period, meter readings, usage in megajoules (MJ), a daily supply charge, any tariffs or discounts, GST and the total amount due. Check whether the meter reading is actual or estimated, as an estimate can make the bill higher or lower than your real usage and may be adjusted later. Compare the usage and rates with an earlier bill, and check that any concession, payment or hardship arrangement has been applied. If something does not look right, contact your retailer first; you can also compare the bill with your state or territory energy regulator’s guidance.
