An electricity bill can rise because of higher wholesale-linked rates, a tariff change, estimated meter reads, seasonal usage or increased daily supply charges. Compare the current bill with an earlier one, checking kilowatt-hours used, billing days, meter-read type and each charge rather than only the total. Contact your retailer if the reading or tariff looks wrong, and ask whether a different plan or payment arrangement is available. If the bill is difficult to pay, ask the retailer about its hardship program; eligibility and assistance are decided by the retailer.
